In 2006, advertisers and marketers spent 310.5 million euros on Internet advertising, 91.38% more than in 2005, according to the results of a study conducted by PriceWaterhouseCoopers for IAB Spain.

Continuous growth

The study highlights the continuous increase in spending on Internet advertising since 2004, in comparison with other media. In 2002, 2003 and 2004, spending totalled 71.2, 72.6 y 94.6 million euros, respectively, while 162.4 and 310.5 million were spent in 2005 and 2006.

Television still rules

With advertising revenues of 3,181 million euros in 2006, television is still the leading medium. Nevertheless, Internet advertising, with 4.25%, already has a greater share of the market than Sunday papers and cinemas. If advertising revenues continue to increase at the same rate, Internet advertising spend will overtake magazines and radio in 2007.

Main sectors

Banking, transport, tourism, media, telecommunications and car manufacturing are the sectors that spend most on Internet advertising.

As regards formats, search engine marketing has registered the biggest growth, with 46.58% of Internet advertising revenues, on par with other more mature European markets.
