Delegates will no longer have to pay Wi-Fi fees, or clock up huge data roaming charges on their mobile devices, if a campaign by professional congress organisers (PCOs) amounts to anything.
ABPCO, the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers, is urging UK venues to lead the way in offering free Wi-Fi access for delegates – and spur more overseas business. The group has launched an online petition to increase pressure on venues, many of whom charge up to £20 a day for the service.
The campaign – called Conference Cloud – follows complaints from ABPCO members about the negative impact of Wi-Fi charges on delegates and pleas from buyers for venues to review their pricing strategies. An open forum at the recent Summer Summit event in Belfast highlighted further rumblings of discontent about Wi-Fi fees.
