The Secretary General for Tourism of the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Regeneration, Justice and Local Administration, Manuel Muñoz, said on Monday that Andalusia aims to consolidate and even increase its market share in Spain in the meetings and congresses segment, once the current situation is overcome.

Muñoz has intervened in the virtual meeting 'MICE & Forum Inside', an event in which the possibilities of events and incentives adapted to the new times have been analysed, with the participation of various national professionals of this sector.

According to the Ministry of Tourism in a statement, Andalusia is the third national destination in the MICE segment, after Catalonia and the Community of Madrid, a privileged position in which they assure that they will work "to maintain and reduce the distance with the country's leaders".

In this sense, he pointed out that this is a product "of unquestionable importance for Andalusia", due to its potential for seasonal adjustment, the spending capacity of this profile of traveller and the business dynamism and income generation it brings to the region.

However, it is one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic, which is why he considered it essential that the current health situation improves in order to be able to resume acceptable levels of activity in the holding of professional meetings.

Resuming events

The Secretary General for Tourism also recalled that during the past year 2020 Andalusia was able to hold some of the events dedicated to this segment of those scheduled, "virtually or in person, always complying with all the health guarantee measures".

Thus, for the current 2021 the intention is to resume the activity, with events such as the OPC Spain congress in Granada, scheduled for late February; or a large MICE tourism forum that was not possible to carry out in 2020 and that is intended to be held this year.

A special effort will also be made in communication from the Regional Ministry directed by Juan Marín "to continue to promote Andalusia as a preferred destination", as well as to support companies in the sector, which are "the fundamental part of the business and for which the Junta is implementing support measures".
