Xacobeos are those years in which July 25 (St James’ Day) falls on a Sunday, as is the case this year. The Xacobeo 2010 is due to be celebrated in a very special way all over Galicia, with a programme of cultural activities keyed to commemorating this unique event.

Santiago de Compostela and Finisterre Cape

The activities in the Xacobeo 2010 programme – music, dance, theatre, magic, children’s shows, charity events, exhibitions, films, sports competitions, food fairs, etc. – are an invitation to experience this celebration in 10 different ways, with something to suit everyone, and featuring appearances by internationally renowned personalities and performers. The Cirque du Soleil, with its show “Saltimbanco”, and a special edition of the Sónar international festival in A Coruña are just a few of the surprises in store.

The events are scheduled to take place in Santiago de Compostela and in other Galician cities such as Vigo, Lugo and A Coruña. The whole of Galicia will thus be transformed into a meeting point for the thousands of visitors coming from all over the world.

The Galician capital has been recognized as one of Christianity’s most important spiritual pilgrimage centres since the Middle Ages. In 1985, UNESCO declared Santiago de Compostela World Heritage Site for its enormous cultural and architectural wealth.

St James’ Way

Despite being essentially religious in its origins, today, thanks to its cultural and scenic factors, it has become a route that brings together different peoples and cultures. This led to the Council of Europe declaring it the first European Cultural Itinerary, thus turning this ancient route into a way of art and spirituality.

Galicia is a fascinating region in Northern Spain, with unspoiled beaches, magical forests, unusual traditions, charming villages... There are a whole range of varied routes and trails to follow. The Xacobeo 2010 offers the best opportunity to discover Galicia in this special, momentous Holy Year.
