Telecom sector presents successor SMS

The GSM Association, the global trade association for mobile providers, will be presenting the successor to SMS at the Mobile World Congress next week: the multimedia, interactive RCS. The first public tests are done with large travel and retail companies.

The concept for RCS, which stands for Rich Communication Services, was presented years ago, but only now is it presented to the market with the support of 36 mobile providers and large integrators such as CLX and CM.com and Messagebird from the Netherlands. The driving force behind the continued development was Google, which modernizes the texting vehicle in Android devices.

RCS is actively supported by the world’s largest telecom operators, including Vodafone, T-Mobile and KPN.

At the Mobile World Congress that takes place next week in Barcelona, a group of large companies will announce the successor of SMS. Among them: Booking.com, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, ITV and Subway.

Demonstrations of the new technology can be seen next week in the Innovation City of GSMA.

By the end of 2018, 350 million mobile devices will be able to handle RCS techniques, that’s the expectation.
