On the final day of IMEX 2009, held in Frankfurt at the end of May, the ICCA Board announced its decision to organize the 51st ICCA Congress in San Juan, Puerto Rico in November 2012. The other finalist in the bidding competition was the city of Monterrey, Mexico.

Martin Sirk, ICCA CEO said: "This is the third time that Puerto Rico has bid to host the congress and it turned out to be a truly exceptional proposal, filled with creative ideas and led by a very professional team. We’ll be using Puerto Rico’s excellent modern convention centre and will be entirely taking over the brand-new, neighbouring Sheraton Hotel, so the vast majority of our delegates will be within walking distance, and we’ll be able to offer non-stop business networking for the whole duration of the event. We’re very excited to bring our congress to the Caribbean for the first time, a region that is just starting to develop its meetings-related infrastructure, and are certain that our decision will be the catalyst for many island nations to take a serious look at our industry. And of course, as always, we’ll be bringing in the most experienced meetings professionals from over 70 countries around the world to create and to enjoy our top level educational programme."
