When the La Monacilla Golf Course, located in the municipality of Aljaraque, is opened in 2008, the province of Huelva will have a total of eight courses.

The province of Huelva, which at present has seven golf courses – those of Isla Canela, Bellavista, Islantilla, El Rompido, Matalascañas, Riotinto and Costa Esury, in Ayamonte– will have an additional course in 2008 with the opening of La Monacilla in the municipality of Aljaraque.

In the words of Felix Garcia Ordaz, lecturer of the department of General Economy and Statistics of the University of Huelva, “there are other projects which are currently paralysed, such as the golf course of Punta Umbria.” He also stressed the important role that the golf sector plays in overcoming the local tourist industry’s seasonality, since golfing tourists also visit the province during the winter months.

In his analysis of the regional golf sector, Felix Garcia Ordaz singled out Andalusia’s climate (51.3%) as the chief reason why golfers choose the region, as well as its folklore and local festivals (17.2%), Andalusian hospitality (6.9%) and prices (6%).

With regard to spending, golfing tourists spend 42.3% of their budget on food and drink, 18.7% on green fees, 18.1% on shopping and 11.8% on accommodation.
