The initiative forms part of the Spanish Inland Revenue’s DIVA project.
This new online system is designed to simplify VAT refunds requested by non-EU tourists, and thus promote the so-called “shopping tourism”. Although there still is not an official launch date, a pilot project was launched last May at the T1 terminal of Madrid Airport, and the idea is to gradually introduce the system all over the country.
Shops will give tourists a form with a barcode or QR code, which they will then have to scan at a kiosk at the VAT refund office before travelling home. Afterwards, with one click, they will be able to request their refund, which will mean greater control and less paperwork.
