Plans have just been announced for a high-speed train link between Malaga and Barcelona, without passing through Madrid. Work has already begun on the by-pass, although there is at yet no completion date.
In the near future, it will be possible to travel between Malaga or Seville and Barcelona, without having to pass through Madrid. Although no deadline has been fixed, the works, consisting of a by-pass linking the southern and northern high-speed train tracks, are already underway. The estimated travel time between Barcelona and the two Andalusian cities will be around five hours.
Furthermore, the high-speed trains linking Malaga with Seville will begin to run on 20 February 2008. The journey between Malaga and Cordoba will take one hour and five minutes, while that between Malaga and Seville, one hour and fifty-five minutes, 35 minutes less than at present.
