Melia Hotels International has been voted as the "Best Spanish Multinational" by the readers of the magazine Emprendedores, an award which the leading hotel company in Spain received at a ceremony held in Madrid on 22 November.
André Gerondeau, executive vice president of Melia Hotels International, on collecting this award, stated that internationalization "has become the lifesaver of many companies in our country."
Melia Hotels International began its international expansion in the 1980s, with the opening of a hotel in Bali (Indonesia). More than 80% of the multinational’s operating profit is now generated by its overseas properties. Business and risk diversification, one of the chain’s main competitive advantages, "has proven to be an important protective shield for the group’s results during these difficult times," Gerondeau said.
