The agreement includes the 204 electrical supply points at the properties managed by Melia Hotels International in Spain, thus deepening its commitment to energy efficiency and environmental protection.

Endesa and Melia have extended the collaboration agreement signed last year to 2016, by virtue of which all the chain’s hotels and corporate headquarters in Spain now function with electricity generated using renewable sources. The power company now covers 204 supply points, with a total yearly consumption of 200 GWh.

As Gabriel Escarrer, vice-president and executive director of Melia Hotels International, explained: "Melia’s properties have a clear commitment to environmental protection and responsible tourism, and thanks to partners like Endesa, which share this commitment, our assessment of the agreement signed last year is excellent, for which reason we have decided to reinforce our collaboration."

The broadening of the agreement represents a further step towards driving energy efficiency in the hotel and tourist industries, to which both companies are committed. In this way, Endesa maintains an important presence in the benchmarks of sustainable management, such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Euronext Vigeo and the prestigious Carbon Disclosure Project, an index in which Melia Hotels International has positioned itself, in addition to being the first hotel company in the Carbon Footprint Register of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, and implementing a far-reaching programme geared to emission reduction and environmental management.
