The first three agreements of the Plan Cualifica were signed last Wednesday at the Torremolinos Exhibition and Congress Centre. With an overall budget of 335 million euros, the plan’s objective is to modernise the Costa del Sol over the next four years.
An initial investment of 14 million euros
The aim of the first phase of the plan is to invest 14 million euros in the modernisation of the coast’s hotels, regenerate the centres and coastlines of the localities involved, and launch a new image through a communication campaign, with the idea of recuperating the area’s cultural identity that was behind the international tourist boom of more than 40 years ago.
In addition to renovating existing hotels, Paulino Plata, head of the regional department of tourism, commerce and sports, advocated for creating specialised hotels and rehabilitating historical building to attract and promote customer loyalty. Likewise, he encouraged hoteliers and businessmen to submit their projects, promising subsidies of up to 25% of the total value of improvements carried out.
Sustainable modernisation
As well as modernising existing facilities and revitalising tourist centres and resorts, the nine strategies making up the plan put the accent on environmental improvement, introducing new tourist products, innovation and the application of new technologies.
The plan will be managed a commission including representatives of the regional government, trade unions and tourism-related associations and confederations, whose job it will be to make sure that strategies and commitments are fulfilled.
