How to Adapt to New Trends in Museology

At the ICOFOM symposium, which was held in Paris from 5-9 June 2014, trends in museology in 2015 were discussed, among other issues.

Among all the emerging trends in the field, it is important to mention the full digital transformation of museums, users as the centre of the process so as to provide them with a good experience based on their participative attitude and active involvement, the omnipresence of mobile technology to do almost everything, and gamification. All of these trends converge in a dematerialization of museology as it has been understood to date giving way to digital culture and the visitors’ experience.

The companies commissioned to supply museums with audiovisual equipment are responsible for implementing these new trends, which clearly need innovative and ground-breaking formats, like for example touch screens. These screens allow visitors to access the information that they are most interested in, while ignoring that which is irrelevant. Video walls have a similar function, since they offer HD images and videos that satisfy the need of visitors to perceive the information visually. Likewise, video projections also offer excellent results and are exceedingly useful.

What is most important is to create an interactive environment that can mark the difference as regards the experience of users and the memory that they take away. The spectacular and the surprising are what engage them most.
