Thanks to the new law on homosexual marriages, which was passed in June 2005, Spain currently leads the field as regards gay weddings. In practically half of these weddings, one of the contracting parties is foreign.

Four years after the new law on homosexual civil weddings was passed, Spain has become the country where the greatest number of gay weddings is celebrated. Curiously, in 45% of these weddings one of the contracting parties is a foreigner.

Since homosexual civil weddings held in Spain are invalid outside the country, when one of the contracting parties is from abroad, the couple usually settles in Spain after the wedding.

At the end of 2008, an estimated 12,324 gay weddings had been celebrated in Spain since the passing of the law four years before.
