Eikonos was commissioned to install a giant 7.5m high smartphone in Portal del Angel, welcoming visitors to the Mobile World Centre.
The 2013 edition of the Mobile World Congress (GSMA 2013), held in Barcelona, is the most important event in the mobile telephone industry. At the show, companies, makers and distributers showcase their new products and services. To create the giant smartphone, Eikonos used a 7x4m LED screen, consisting of 70 10mm modules. The screen was surrounded by a wood structure simulating a Samsung Note 2. The operating system used was Watchout 5.
Using the hashtag #welcomemobile, everyone could interact with the phone and participate in the biggest welcome in the world, transmitting their messages via Twitter. Celebrities taking part in the initiative included Ferran Adria, Custo Dalmau, Sandro Rossell, and Leonor Watling, among others.
This initiative constituted the largest welcome to the world’s mobile telephone capital, as well as marking the opening of the Mobile World Centre Espacio Movistar, which took place just before the show, on 15 February.
Eikonos also installed smaller versions of the smartphone, with 80" screens operating by remote control, at the city’s major shopping centres.
