Easter in Granada is characterized by the uniqueness of its processions. Declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 2009, this acknowledgement is only shared by the Easter processions of Malaga and Seville.
Easter falls on a different date each year and usually coincides with the first full moon following the spring equinox. In 2016, Easter in Granada will be held from 20-27 March. Granada has 32 brotherhoods with over 2,000 people carrying 58 pasos through the city’s main streets, accompanied by more than 5,000 brethren.
Some of the most outstanding Easter processions include the following:
- On Wednesday, at 4.45pm “The Christ of the Gypsies”, which worships the Most Holy Christ of Solace and the Most Holy Mary of Sacromonte.
- On Thursday, “The Silence”, a procession that takes place at midnight in total silence, except for the sound of drums, the streetlights extinguishing as it passes.
- On Saturday, “La Alhambra”. The beginning of this procession at 5.30pm is accompanied by such a cacophony of bells and rockets that it can be heard all over the city. After leaving its church in the Alhambra, the procession winds its way through the Nasrid complex. The procession can be seen from many vantage points, but from inside the Alhambra is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular spots.
