The Costa del Sol: a top sports destination

Do you love sport? 2018 will be packed with sporting events of all kinds, where you can enjoy the excitement as it happens. The Costa del Sol hosts internationally recognised races and championships for every taste. Come and see for yourself!

May: Harlem Globetrotters

On May 16, the Harlem Globetrotters will come to the Martín Carpena Palace to show supporters why they are still the greatest basketball acrobats. The star-studded North American team will put on a spectacular show based on agility, acrobatics and masterful ball skills. It’s a fusion of sport, entertainment and humour: perfect for a family day out.

August: Vuelta a España Bicycle Race 2018

On August 25, 2018 the Vuelta a España bicycle race starts. The starting point is the Centro Pompidou in Málaga and it passes through the Caminito del Rey, among other locations in the province. This will be the third time that the city hosts the Vuelta (it already did so in 2000 and 2006), an international event that will publicise the charms of the city and serve as a prelude to the Costa del Sol being the European Capital of Sport in 2020.

September: World Master Athletics Championships 2018

Málaga has been chosen to host the World Championships for veterans in 2018. This will be the second time that the championships have been celebrated on Spanish soil, following the success of the event in San Sebastián in 2005, with more than 6,000 athletes and 139 medals for the Spanish national team, the highest figure to date. This sporting event will be held on September 4 and 16 and around 8,000 athletes are expected to participate.
