Madrid’s Plaza Colon will house a fulldome cinema seating 200 people, equipped with five Christie Roadster HD20K-J projectors.
The event production company New Media, together with Sony and Madrid City Council, has installed a spherical cinema, seating up to 200 people, which will be offering 360º screenings over Christmas using five Christie Roadster HD20K-J projectors. A pioneering initiative in Spain, the general public will be treated to unprecedented sensorial experience.
Called CineXfera, the fulldome cinema is four times bigger than an IMAX, with a totally circular 800m2 screen, making it a unique and unforgettable venue. "Using sophisticated technical equipment, we are going to implement an unprecedented initiative offering audiences a unique immersive experience, enveloping them in images," said Diego De Anna, CEO at New Media.
To this end, New Media has installed a geodesic dome, jointly developed by Pacific Domes and Obscura Digital, brought over especially from California (USA). What is involved is a projection screen made of a special material that allows perfect 360º projections, using the most advanced and sophisticated negative suction pressure equipment which totally eliminates all visible structures; a milestone in modern engineering techniques.
From 21 December-6 January, National Geographic’s Sea Monsters will be shown for the very first time in Spain. Furthermore, the dome will also be used for different shows organized by other collaborating companies and organizations, such as Pfizer, Grupo Audi-Volkswagen Germany, the Archdiocese of Madrid, etc., until the end of February.
Four Christie Roadster HD20K-J (DLP® de 3 chips, HD resolution, 18,000 ANSI lumens), featuring edge blending, will be used to project different content on the spherical screen, totalling some 6,000,000 pixels. Another Christie Roadster HD20K-J projector will be installed outside the dome for screening trailers. Additional equipment includes a 7th Sense Delta Media Server and a 5.1 Dolby Digital sound system. Footage will be screened in TGA with a 4K resolution in fulldome format.
"We’ve chosen Christie projectors due to their reliability, robustness and versatility," explained Diego De Anna. "These projectors offer us the best functionalities on the market versus similar equipment, as well as being very intuitive to use; without forgetting the technical support that the company’s Spanish office affords us, which for us is of vital importance."
