According to a survey conducted recently by Nielsen Company and Pacific Asia Travel Association, Chinese tourists travelling abroad spend on average $3,000 per trip. Those visiting Europe are the biggest spenders, splashing out an average of $5,253 per trip on luxury accommodation, shopping sprees and expenses prior to the trip.
With exception to those travelling to Hong or Macao, Chinese tourists visiting destinations in Asia – still by far the most popular destination because of its proximity – spend an average of $1,900 per trip.
Nonetheless, trips to Europe and America are becoming increasing more popular destination with Chinese tourists with spending power, a rapidly emerging segment in China, as well as with Chinese businessmen. The survey showed that over one-third of Chinese overseas travellers stay at four-star hotel, with an additional 10% opting for five-star accommodation.
Internet
Internet has become an essential planning tool for Chinese travellers. According to the results of the survey, nearly seven in 10 potential holidaymakers browsed destination websites for information, while close to six in 10 used travel discussion forums.
In China, Internet is the most popular source of information, followed by travel agents and other media, such as trade magazines and newspapers. With regard to bookings, 61% of all tourists use travel agencies, 29% choose online travel services and 16% book through hotel or transport operator’s websites. A rise in online bookings is forecast for 2008.
In 2006, the Chinese made 35 million trips abroad, a figure that is expected increase dramatically in the near future.
