Around 700 teachers will be attending the three-day event, scheduled to start tomorrow, May 6, which for the first time will be broadcast live on the Web via a platform created especially for the occasion.

The Canaries Congress Centre – Alfredo Kraus Auditorium will be hosting the Educational Congress on Climate Change, under the slogan “An interdisciplinary approach from the school setting,” which starts tomorrow, May 6.

Organized for the first time by the Department of Education of the Regional Government of Canaries, this event is geared to teachers from all over Spain, who will be able to attend in person or follow proceedings online via a specially created platform with video streaming. Some 700 teachers are expected to attend, 200 in person and another 500 virtually. Those interested will be able to consult any information, keynote, image, etc. online up until 15 days after the start of the congress.

This congress forms a part of the educational and awareness policies of the Regional Government of Canaries touching on the challenges humanity faces in all spheres, above all in the school setting; one of the main objectives being that of introducing pupils to the scientific factors of climate change and related social dilemmas.

The aim of the event is to provide the educational community with a forum and material for an in-depth analysis of the realities surrounding climate change, as well as its causes and consequences. In addition, the idea is to open a debate on the need for action, both in schools and in everyday life, as well as identifying the tools currently available, from a perspective of the current situation and its future evolution.

Other objectives include the dissemination of an interdisciplinary approach to the phenomenon in question, the assessment of evidence of climate change in the Canaries, and the reinforcement of measures and behaviours of mitigation and adaptation contained in the document “Strategies for Combating Climate Change in the Canaries”.

Climate change is in all probability the most serious socio-environmental problem confronting the world nowadays. Its consequences will affect the lifestyle of many people and modify a large number of ecosystems. All the population should be committed to combating climate change, and this is where education plays a fundamental role.
