The Spanish Ministry of Public Works has just received a petition submitted by the developer Grupo Vera to build Antequera Airport (Malaga), and has begun to process the application, with its publication in the Official Gazette (BOE), on considering that it could promote the common good and general welfare.

For the initiative to be successful, the developer should conduct a viability study, justifying the classification of the airport as one that promotes the common good and general welfare, the purpose and characteristics of the airport, estimates of demand and economic impact, an environmental sustainability study to evaluate alternative locations and justify the chosen location, the operative and technological risks, and the overall investment.

Low-cost flights

It is hoped that Antequera Airport will open in 2009. According to Grupo Vera, some 4,300 flights and 500,000 arrivals are expected during the first year, with low-cost airlines making up the bulk of the carriers. Estimates for traffic ten years after opening are in the region of 15,000 flights and two million arrivals per year.

Facilities

The future airport will have one 3,700m runway, a parking stand, a 9,000m2 terminal, a control tower, a fire station and parking for 500 cars, among other facilities to be built in successive stages.
