Other events such as the NBA are awaiting the evolution of COVID-19
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, due to start on July 24, will be postponed until 2021 because of the spread of the coronavirus.
Following the request from the Japanese capital, Japan's Minister for the Games, Seiko Hashimoto, has made public the decision agreed to by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and IOC President Thomas Bach.
"Under the current circumstances and based on the information provided by WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo should be rescheduled for a date beyond 2020, but no later than the summer of 2021, to safeguard the health of athletes, all those involved in the Olympic Games and the international community," the two sides announced in a joint statement.
Other national and international sporting events such as the European Football Championship, the Copa America, the Oxfam Intermon Trailwalker and the Rome Marathon have also been postponed until 2021.
Meanwhile, other competitions such as the tennis circuit, the NBA or the football leagues, are postponed for the moment with indicative restart dates pending the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken by the authorities.
