Spain welcomes the gay community
Same-sex marriage in Spain has been legal for Spanish residents since July 2005 with many areas celebrating Gay Pride Month each June. In fact Madrid has one of the biggest Pride Parades in Europe with the flamboyant festivities of Orgullo Gay de Madrid known as MADO.
Sitges is world famous for openly embracing the LGBTQ+ community and Barcelona even has a neighbourhood affectionately called Gaixample packed with gay bars, nightclubs and restaurants.
Gay destination weddings in Spain
Many same sex couples from overseas are now choosing Spain as their destination wedding location.
With easily accessible international airports and 320 days of sunshine on the southern coast of Spain the wedding venues along the coast and inland are seeing a surge of bookings from brides and grooms wanting to take advantage of the “equally wed” culture where your euro still goes further than other destination wedding locations like Italy or Greece.
Celebrating love is love
Speaking personally as a wedding celebrant, in the first six months of 2022 I have officiated more gay weddings in Spain than ever before!
Two gorgeous grooms opted for the well-known flamenco caves of Granada to hold their ceremony; another same sex couple tied the knot of matrimony quite literally with a hand tying ritual on a crop threshing circle near Cabo de Gata. A third gay couple celebrated their love in front of family and friends at a hilltop villa with distant views to the sea near Marbella, two brides said their personal vows to each other at a very simple beach ceremony and a fifth gay wedding couple shouted their love from the rooftop of one of the tallest hotels in Benidorm!
