The project comprises an 18-minute social documentary, media and social media campaigns, and screenings and debates in three continents.
Launched at the end of 2012, "The Threshold of the Desert" is an awareness-heightening communication campaign whose aim is to promote gender equality and equal job opportunities for women in Arab countries.
Since being launched, the project has been presented in Madrid (with the UN), Morocco (with Foro Casablanca - Art week), Malaga (with Zonta International) and Alicante (with Casa Mediterráneo). On the 2 October "The Threshold of the Desert" will be presented before the European Parliament, in collaboration with the European Union, the UN, the OECD, the World Bank and the Anna Lindh Foundation.
The project presentation will take place on 2 October from 3-6.30pm in Room 3G3 of the European Parliament. The event is open to the general public and free of charge. The documentary
"The Threshold of Desert," directed by Ramon Vila of Vision Films, showcases a number of edifying examples of women empowerment stories in the Arab world. This 18-minute documentary, selected at the Cannes Film Festival, raises awareness about the capacity of women as drivers of development and social change in rural areas of the Arab world. S&D will be launching the première of this documentary in Brussels, with the presence of Ramon Vila, Aziz Najat (the documentary’s main star), and representatives from UN Women, the OECD, the World Bank and the Anna Lindh Foundation, who will exchange views and proposals as regards women as actors of change and economic empowerment.
