Altamira Tourism School presents Peregrino Lebaniego Digital project

A unique formula for making the most of resources and the experience offered by the Camino Lebaniego.

The Altamira Tourism School has recently presented the Peregrino Lebaniego Digital project at a seminar organized for industry professionals and the school’s students, with the participation of Eva Bartolomé, director general of tourism of Cantabria, Elena Iglesias, director of communication at Viesgo, Raúl Santos of the Zwit Project, the company responsible for the project, and Ángel Herrero, director of the Altamira Tourism School.

Peregrino Lebaniego Digital is a network of 15 beacons, powered by solar energy, which have been distributed along the route between San Vicente de la Barquera and Santo Toribio de Liébana, providing free Wi-Fi coverage, as well as additional information for pilgrims completing the Camino Lebaniego. This project dovetails with the philosophy of the Altamira Tourism School which is committed to connectivity, technology and sustainable development in the region.

The network of content and information on the region can be accessed by pilgrims taking the route, who in turn can interact with their own contacts anywhere in the world in real time. Thanks to geolocation and the agenda included in the app, pilgrims can discover interesting landmarks along the way, interesting information, places worth visiting, alternative routes, things to do, and places to eat and rest.

To access this information all pilgrims have to do is download a free app available for all kinds of mobile devices. Furthermore, this app offers them the possibility of obtaining the Lebaniego digital passport, stamping each stage completed before arriving at Santo Toribio, and gaining the jubilee indulgence simply by passing by each one of the 15 beacons.

The network also ensures the safety of pilgrims, since they are registered when passing by each one of the beacons, including their identity and the time.
